Every smile tells a story - Starting Point 2012 video presentation

The board viewed the “Every smile tells a story” video which was one of three videos presented during Tony Pontes’ address to more than 1,000 Peel board employees at the Starting Point event on August 28, 2012. In the video, excited Peel frontline staff show how every smile tells a story. The story gets better and better because of the tremendous work Peel staff do each and every day to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student. Peel schools awarded Parents Reaching Out Grants
Peel board trustees congratulated the 107 Peel schools that have been awarded a total of $103,315 in Parents Reaching Out Grants. The Ministry of Education program supports projects that help create a more welcoming environment for parents who face barriers to becoming involved in their children’s education or school. Board approves regional program boundaries
Peel board trustees approved the boundaries for the T.L. Kennedy Secondary School International and Executive Leadership Academy Program and the Applewood Heights Secondary School Sports Program. For more information, call 905-890-1010 ext. 2212.

Board revises procurement policy

Peel District School Board revised Procurement policy #80 to increase the threshold limits for processes for the procurement of goods and services. These changes will increase the efficiency of the processes for principals/managers and Purchasing staff. The revised policy has been posted on the board’s website at

Board considers proposed recommendations from French Immersion Review Committee

Trustees received the final report of the French Immersion Review Committee, Elementary, September 2012, which included the following recommendations that the board will consider at the next Regular Meeting of the Board on September 25, 2012:

a) That the board implement 50% daily instructional time in grades 1-8 French immersion (FI), effective September 2013.
b) That the board place an enrolment cap on all grade 1 elementary FI programs, maintaining the level of access (i.e. 25% of the total Peel District School Board grade 1 enrolment) identified in the 2012-13 school year, effective 2013. The enrolment cap is to be reviewed by December 2017.
c) That the board consider the feasibility of appointing an administrator to facilitate the attraction and retention of French language staff.
d) That staff consider the organization of both single track and dual track FI schools as a part of the 2012-13 annual planning process and annually thereafter.
e) That the board establish a committee to conduct a full review of the FI/extended French program at the secondary level during the 2013-14 school year.

Board approves tender for construction of Credit Valley Sub Area2#2 Public School

Trustees approved a tender for the construction of Credit Valley Sub Area2#2 Public School to Remo General Contracting Ltd. at a cost of $11.57 million, including HST.


Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who are retiring:

Jack Jamieson, teacher, retired Aug. 31
Judi McCrae, executive secretary, will retire Oct. 21
Marian McInnes, teacher, will retire Sept. 30
Suzanne Morrison, vice principal, will retire Nov. 30
Sara Riggio-Irving, teacher, retired Aug. 31
Suzanne Wilkinson, teacher, retired Aug. 31

The next regular meeting of the board of trustees is Sept. 25, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.
