A pre-recorded video of a dance performance by Cawthra Park Secondary School students was shared. The students were to perform at the schools' annual spring show on April 7, but due to the school closures, each student recorded their parts remotely. The video can be viewed on the Share the Smile website.

Delegations

Kola Iluyomade delegated the board regarding mental health, anti-Blac​​​​k racism and racial trauma.​

Board recognizes May as Asian Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month

The board recognizes both Asian Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month in the month of May. During school closures, staff, students, families and communities are encouraged to s​​pend time learning about the rich culture, heritage and contributions of Asian Canadians and Jewish Canadians, who throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous country we know today.​

Board celebrates public education during Education Week

The board celebrated public education and accomplishments of staff, students and school communities during Education Week from April 20 to 24. As Peel communities face school closures, the board recognized Peel students, staff and community members by sharing inspiring stories, creations and profiles on its social media channels. More than 750 individuals—staff, students, volunteers and community members—were recognized with Awards of Distinction for their exemplary contributions to schools and/or worksites.​

Board approves action on Ministry Directive 6: Trustee Learning Plan

Directive 6 from the Minister of Education requires the board to establish and implement a mandatory annual learning plan for all members of the Board of Trustees. At tonight's Regular Meeting of the Board, Trustees approved:

  • receipt of the Governance, Human Rights and Equity Training for PDSB Trustees Report for information
  • committing to completing the mandatory learning plan
  • Chair MacDonald's submission of the Governance, Human Rights and Equity Training for PDSB Trustees Report to the Minister of Education by June 1, 2020​

Board approves action on Ministry Directive 7: Board Committee Diversity

Directive 7 from the Minister of Education requires the board to review its standing and ad hoc committees, and to take steps to ensure that the racial diversity of the members of the board is adequately represented in committee composition. At tonight's Regular Meeting of the Board, Trustees approved:

  • receipt of the Board Committee Diversity Report for information
  • confirming that the racial diversity of the members of the board is adequately represented in its committees' composition
  • Chair MacDonald's submission of the Board Committee Diversity Report and confirmation that the racial diversity of the members of the board is adequately represented in its committees' composition to the Minister of Education ​

Board approves motion to include written reports related to Ministry directives in all agendas

Trustees approved a motion to include written reports in agendas that are related to the Ministry of Education's directives.

Chair provides update on Board actions taken on Ministry directives

Chair MacDonald shared an oral report on action taken since the last Regular Meeting of the Board on April 29, 2020. He indicated that mediation was started with an independent mediator, and that interviews with Trustees and the Director's Office had been completed. The mediator's interim report will be submitted on May 14, 2020, and a final report will be submitted by June 19, 2020, to the Minister of Education, as directed.

He also shared that Arleen Huggins, the investigator appointed by the Minister of Education, has started her investigation into the Peel Board's compliance with the directives. Her report will be submitted on May 18,, 2020.

Chair MacDonald also indicated that, he will be bringing a report detailing all the work completed by the Board on the directives to the next Regular Meeting of the Board on May 26, 2020.

Director of Education provides update on operational actions taken on Ministry directives

Director Joshua shared an oral report with the Board of Trustees, based on an update shared with staff, families and community on May 4, 2020.

Board approved the 2020-21 Regular Meeting of the Board schedule

Trustees approved the schedule of board meeting dates for the 2020-21 period. The schedule can be found in Section 9.4 of the Board Meeting agenda. ​
