Chair provides update on Minister of Education's Directives

Chair Brad MacDonald provided an update on the status of the board's work to address the Minister of Education's directives to the Peel District School Board.

Since the last Regular Meeting of the Board on April 15, 2020, mediation has started with an independent mediator and interviews with Trustees have begun. The mediator will submit an interim report by May 14, 2020, and a final report by June 19, 2020, to the Minister of Education, as directed.

The board has also retained the services of an external parliamentarian/governance expert who began her work April 20, 2020. Per directive 5, she will identify procedures and practices for effective, respectful and transparent governance, and provide a progress report to the Ministry of Education by June 1, 2020.

"It remains our intention to comply with each of the Minister's 27 directives. Since March 13, 2020, we have made progress on a number of directives, and met every deadline to date while supporting students, staff and families during the COVID-19 pandemic," noted Chair MacDonald. "Last night, the Minister of Education Stephen Lecce announced that he has appointed Arleen Huggins to conduct an investigation into the Peel Board's compliance with the directives. We look forward to sharing our progress on the directives' deliverables and timelines with the investigator, and believe this process will validate the work we're doing."

Continued Chair MacDonald, "We have much work to do as a team to rebuild our relationships with each other and the community to improve outcomes for students and staff. But we will not be able to do any of this necessary work if we do not work as a cohesive unit. Supported by the mediator, we hope to return to effective and respectful governance that is focused on students so that we can work to eliminate anti-Black racism and systemic discrimination. We have heard from many members of the community and staff who are ready to help us continue to move forward with this very important work. They are relying on us to take the Ministry of Education's report and the Minister's directives seriously, and we are doing just that. We remain committed to following through on each of the directives set out for us to help improve outcomes for students and staff."
