Calderstone Middle School receives 2014 Learning for a Sustainable Future Jack Layton Award

Congratulations to students at Calderstone Middle School who are first place award winners of the 2014 LSF (Learning for a Sustainable Future) Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability! For their project, students from the Leaders for the Environment, Agriculture…our Future (LEAF) club participated in various discussions focusing on topics including the benefits of urban farming, the importance of healthy living and food industry careers. In June, LEAF planned and participated in a "Healthy Iron Chef" competition, where students showcased their knowledge by preparing healthy recipes using locally-grown ingredients.

The LSF Jack Layton Award for Youth Action in Sustainability was created in honour of Jack Layton’s passion for optimism and hope in creating a more sustainable future . The award is given to schools who have responded to community challenges with creativity, responsible citizenship and innovative action. Fantastic job, Calderstone!
