On June 1, students at Turner Fenton Secondary School hosted their 11th annual Suddenly Opportunities are Reachable (SOAR) event for over 130 delegates in grades 7 and 8. This leadership conference focuses on helping middle school students effectively transition into high school by bridging the gap between social and academic areas through leadership.
"We want this to be a safe and nurturing environment so they can grow as both leaders and as people."
This event began 11 years ago when students recognized the difficulties that many were having with their transition from elementary and middle school into high school.
Delegates who attended the event receive valuable insight and advice about high school life, all the while participating in fun leadership activities and workshops, including trust-building exercises, stress simulators and more. In addition, students learn about extracurricular opportunities available to them and meet with motivational speakers who emphasizes the importance of community involvement in both their personal and academic development.
