Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI) or Extended French (EF) for the 2015-16 school year? For entry into grade 1 FI or grade 7 EF, parents must register their children online at www.peelschools.org/French by Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at 4 p.m.
"The timing of the registration date will help determine the number of grade 1 and 7 FI and EF classes at each school for the 2015-16 school year," says Jeff DeFreitas, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. "The January deadline helps the board hire the appropriate number of qualified staff it will need, and helps reduce the level of student disruption in September since no new FI classes will likely be created at re-organization time."
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. The cap is set at 25 per cent of the total annual enrolment number in grade 1. There is no enrolment cap for EF.
A random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who make the registration deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Exceptions to FI random selection process
Students who currently (2014-15) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 3 to 7) would automatically be placed into the grade 1 FI program, provided they register online by the January 30, 2015 deadline. This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2015-16 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 3 to 7 FI will participate in the random selection process in future years.
Students who are currently in a Kindergarten FI program in another publicly-funded school board will be automatically placed into the grade 1 FI program.
Additional information about the FI registration process, random selection process system and waitlist is available on the board's website at www.peelschools.org/French. Parents can also visit the website of Canadian Parents for French (Ontario) at http://on.cpf.ca/ for additional information.
