Conference focuses on numeracy—25 of 60 workshops help with math, part of board's three-year comprehensive math strategy
The Peel District School Board will host Numeracy and Beyond: Parent Conference 2015 on Saturday, April 18 at Fletcher's Meadow Secondary School in Brampton. This free learning event is for parents of Peel board elementary and secondary students.
"At the beginning of the year, we introduced EngageMath, the board's three-year comprehensive math strategy. This conference will help deliver on our commitment to numeracy success, by providing tips to parents to boost their child's achievement," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "The conference is a chance for parents to learn from some of our own educators who are recognized throughout Ontario as experts in numeracy and many other subject areas."
At the conference, parents will hear from Amy Lin, a PhD candidate in math education and co-director of a global education social enterprise. As classrooms continue to evolve, many parents want to ensure their children are prepared. Lin will address parents' concerns and discuss how some of the approaches to teaching math in the classroom have changed, the importance of promoting a growth mindset and the impact this has on children's learning of math and their potential to succeed.
Parents can also choose from 60 workshops and visit organizations that will be on hand to share their materials with parents. Workshops include:
Notes Brian Woodland, director of communications and community relations, "Every year, this free of charge conference attracts over 1,000 parents from across Peel.
