Special education support starts now for new kindergarten students

Parents of children with special needs invited to workshop to learn about programs, transition to school

Parents of children born in 2011 who have a documented developmental disability, including ASD/PDD, physical disability, low vision, or who have low hearing, and who will start kindergarten in September 2015, are invited to attend an information session on Thursday, Jan. 22. The session is designed to provide parents and caregivers with the information they need about the transition to school. Parents will have an opportunity to meet the team that will support their child’s entry and have their questions answered.

“Starting kindergarten is a big step for both children and their parents—and even more so when a child has special needs,” says Louise Sirisko, superintendent of special education support services with the Peel District School Board. “We recognize this and want to start working with families as soon as possible to help prepare for their child’s transition to school. The special education information session provides parents with an opportunity to meet the team, learn more about our programs and ask any questions they may have.”

The session features a panel discussion with experts from the Peel board and the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) who will talk about the supports available for students. Topics include:
  • how to register for kindergarten
  • how the intake process works and the types of information schools and staff will ask for in order to better understand the child’s needs
  • an overview of how special education staff prepare to welcome new students, including visiting the child before the start of school and working with the CCAC to prepare the classroom
  • information about the special education supports provided in schools

For more information about the information session, call 905-890-1010 ext. 2315. The session is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario Street in Mississauga.

To register for kindergarten, parents can visit their child’s home school anytime throughout the school year or attend a kindergarten registration week at their child’s school on Feb. 2, 3, 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Feb. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. To find out which school their child will attend parents can visit the Find Your School page on the board website or call 905-890-1010/1-800-668-1146 ext. 2212.

To prepare for kindergarten registration, parents of children with special needs can visit the kindergarten registration section of www.peelschools.org and download the Planning For Entry Form. The completed form should be submitted to the school during registration. The form provides schools and the special education department with important information about the child’s needs.
