School bus drivers receive gifts of thanks from students, staff on Oct. 17

Peel schools celebrate Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Peel District School Board schools will pay tribute to school bus drivers on Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Oct. 17. The day will be celebrated with special activities and events that provide teachers, students and parents with an opportunity to thank the people who safely transport 37,000 students to and from school each day.

“We welcome the opportunity to express our gratitude, support and respect for our bus drivers,” says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. “On Oct. 17, we have an opportunity  to show how much we appreciate the hard work and dedication our bus drivers put into their jobs every day to ensure that our students arrive safely.”

Students, staff and parents will recognize their bus drivers in their own special ways. In Brampton, students at Goldcrest Public School will design hand-made cards—big and small—that will be given to each driver along with a gift card as a token of their appreciation. Bus drivers in Caledon will receive home-made cookies from staff and students at Caledon East Public School. In Mississauga, students in the hospitality program at West Credit Secondary School will show appreciation for their bus drivers with gifts of fresh baked banana bread.

“Our drivers are dedicated people who work through all types of weather to transport our students safely,” notes Dana Sheahan, principal at West Credit. “Their commitment should not go unnoticed.”
In 2005, the Peel board adopted Bus Driver Appreciation Day to celebrate its drivers in a special way. The Peel board serves more than 150,000 students in kindergarten to grade 12. Operating 239 schools in the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga. For more information, visit the board’s website at www.peelschools.org.
