CANCELLED: Applewood Heights SS community meeting on June 9

The community follow-up meeting regarding the proposed athletic facility at Applewood Heights SS scheduled for Monday June 9 has been cancelled. Below is a letter to Applewood Heights SS families and community members regarding the proposed athletic facility.

June 6, 2014

As you may be aware, the Peel District School Board has been looking into the possibility of developing a partnership to build an athletic facility at Applewood Heights Secondary School. The proposal we chose to investigate, through our standard procurement policy, was with RMI (Razor Management). It is increasingly difficult to find funds to build or refurbish fields and facilities and this partnership would have provided the community with a world class all season track and field. The proposal seemed like a win-win for the school and the community, and would have been an incredible asset.

As presenting the opportunity and hearing the opinions of the community was of paramount importance to the Board, a community meeting was arranged and held at Applewood Heights SS.  At this meeting, we received feedback from some in the community and it became clear there was both excitement and serious concerns.

Therefore, while difficult, we have decided as a Board that we will not proceed with a partnership to create the athletic facility at Applewood Heights Secondary School. We have informed RMI and the administration and staff at Applewood Heights of this decision.

The public meeting scheduled for Monday June 9th has been cancelled.

While this decision will be greeted with approval by those opposed to the facility, it will be deeply disappointing to the majority of students, staff and families of Applewood Heights Secondary School, as well as those in the community who are in favour of and excited about this proposed facility. As Trustee, I appreciate the need to improve the existing athletic facilities at Applewood Heights and together with  the Board will work to find a way to improve the existing sports facilities at Applewood Heights.

I would like to thank you for making your voice heard, for expressing your opinion, and for being part of an open and democratic decision-making process.

I am proud and honoured to represent the Applewood community and Applewood Heights Secondary School – students, staff and administration - and look forward to continuing the strong association we enjoy.

Sincerely,

Sue Lawton, Trustee
Peel District School Board
Wards 3 and 4
