Over 4,000 cheering students will fill The Powerade Centre in Brampton on May 22 as they celebrate literacy with their favourite Canadian authors at this year’s Forest of Reading Celebration. During the Forest of Reading program students are encouraged by teacher librarians to read books by Canadian authors from different categories throughout the school year and vote for their favourites in each category.
“After reading a variety of books throughout the year, this event gives students a chance to meet the authors,” says Jeanne Conte, Library Coordinator for the Peel District School Board. “It's amazing to see a stadium full of students celebrating Canadian literature.”
The event will feature a number of renowned Canadian authors including:
- Eric Walters
- Etta Kaner
- Kellie Armstrong
- Kevin Sylvester
- Rob Laidlaw
- Ted Staunton
Students will learn the results of their votes as the winners of the following programs are announced: Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fiction, Silver Birch Non-Fiction and Red Maple Fiction.
Forest of Reading is an annual program run by the Ontario Library Association (OLA), with a focus on connecting students with great books by Canadian authors and getting them involved in their school library. The OLA suggests students read at least 5 books from the category they wish to vote in.
The OLA would like to recognize that this event couldn’t be possible without the generosity of the following sponsors:
Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment
Saunders Book Company
Scholastic Book Fairs
Toronto Argonauts Football Club
The event is at 10:15-1:30 p.m. on May 22 at the Powerade Centre located at 7575 Kennedy Road, South Brampton. For more information about the books, authors and programs please visit: http://bit.ly/RArn3q.
