Morning Star Middle School celebrates International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples with award-winning native elder

Morning Star Middle School will celebrate the International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples on Oct. 12 with a presentation from Brother Ernie Paniccioli, a native elder and award-winning hip-hop photographer. The day commemorates indigenous peoples’ culture, contributions and resilience from around the world.

“This presentation is a great opportunity for students to see a native person who goes beyond the textbook representation of indigenous peoples,” says Dawn Addison, principal at Morning Star. “Brother Ernie’s visit adds to the rich and inclusive experience we offer at our school, and is sure to be memorable for students.”

Paniccioli is a human rights activist and founder of the Occupy Hip Hop movement, which seeks to restore the original artistic elements of the arts and counter the current emphasis on violence, materialism and sexism. He has authored 12 books and presented at Harvard University and the United Nations.

The presentation will be held at 1 p.m. in Morning Star’s gymnasium, located at 3131 Morning Star Dr. in Mississauga.
