Peel’s second Specialist High Skills Major conference supports student pathway

More than 500 grade 11 students, enrolled in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs, will attend the Peel District School Board’s second SHSM student conference on April 2 and 3. Guest speaker Sean Aiken, author of The One-Week Job Project, will share his 52 jobs in 52 weeks experience with students and encourage them to pursue their passions. Students will also participate in one of nine certification/training sessions and earn certificates upon completing the training.

“Students will learn valuable knowledge and skills relevant to the SHSM sector they are currently studying. The conference allows students to enhance their skills and knowledge to prepare them for all post-secondary pathways—apprenticeship, college, independent living, university and the workplace,” says Patricia Rossall, superintendent of alternative programs. “Based on the success of last year’s SHSM conference, it is important that we continue to provide students with valuable experiences to ensure they achieve continued success after high school.”

SHSM is a ministry-approved program that allows students to focus their learning in a specific area of interest. Students in grades 11 and 12 who are interested can enrol in an SHSM program. The following SHSM sectors are available at Peel secondary schools:

• Arts and Culture   • Information and Communications Technology
• Business   • Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services
• Construction   • Manufacturing
• Environment   • Non-Profit
• Health and Wellness   • Sports
• Hospitality and Tourism   • Transportation

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Mississauga Grand Banquet Centre, located at 35 Brunel Rd. in Mississauga. For more information on Peel’s SHSM programs, visit Learn more about Aiken and his project at
