Registration is open for Peel board's 13th annual parent conference

Workshops provide tips to help parents boost their child's success

The Peel District School Board will host Make a difference in literacy and beyond – practical ways parents can boost learning on March 29 at Mississauga Secondary School in Mississauga. This free learning event is for parents of Peel board elementary and secondary students.

“Every year, this conference attracts over 1,000 parents from across Peel,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “The conference is a chance for parents to learn from some of our own educators who are recognized throughout Ontario as experts in literacy and many other subject areas.”

At the conference, parents will hear from George Couros, a division principal of innovative teaching and learning with Parkland School Division, located in Stony Plain, Alberta. Couros will present Parent 2.0. As schools look forward to using social media to improve learning in schools, many parents are fearful of what this means. Couros will address parents’ concerns and encourage them to help children form positive digital footprints.

Parents can also choose from more than 40 workshops and visit community organizations that will be on hand to share their materials with parents.

Workshops include:
• Building your digital footprint
• Help your child be successful in French Immersion
• Help your child with homework
• Help your child write with confidence
• Develop literacy and numeracy through play
• Plan for success—tools and strategies for career life planning
• How schools teach a balanced literacy program to 21st Century learners
• Understanding the school system

Notes Brian Woodland, director of communications and community relations, "Each year we receive feedback from parents telling us that they are always impressed with the value of the workshops and exhibitors, which is all offered free of charge. The support we receive from major sponsors and community organizations has made the event accessible to all Peel board parents.”
