Over 400 students and teachers from the Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will come together at the Cassie Campbell Community Centre on Feb. 7 to celebrate the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The day-long event features appearances by Canadian athletes, a torch relay, and a number of Olympic-themed activities.
"This event will give students a unique opportunity to experience the opening of the Olympics alongside athletes who have actually been there" says Kyra Kristensen-Irvine, principal at Rowntree Public School. "Through their examples of hard work, determination and dedication, the athletes will reinforce the Peel board’s mission to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student."
21 Peel and Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools from northwest Brampton will be participating in this Olympic kickoff event that includes:
• torch relay around the Cassie Campbell Community Centre (all participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal and toque)
• opening ceremonies on ice, with an appearance by athlete Vicky Sunohara
• singing of the national anthem in English and French
• presentation from Skate Canada
• hockey match between firefighters and students
• crafts, games and cookie decorating
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cassie Campbell Community Centre, located at 1050 Sandalwood Parkway West in Brampton.
