Peel board students embark on journey of understanding at Spotlight on Black Heritage

More than 500 students and teachers from across Peel will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre on Feb. 12 and 13 for the Peel District School Board’s annual Spotlight on Black Heritage events. The events will include keynote presentations by Dwayne Morgan and Spider Jones, as well as a variety of hands-on, interactive workshops.

“As Canadians, the contributions from various cultures have played a significant role in our country’s great history,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “It is important that we take time throughout the month of February to celebrate and honour the many achievements and contributions of black Canadians.”

Students in grades 7 to 12 will attend the event on Feb.12, and students in grade 2 to 6 will attend on Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Many Peel board schools will also take part in Black History Month celebrations and activities throughout the month. Fairlawn Public School in Brampton will hold an open house to display a black history museum entitled From Grass to Grace, which features student performances and exhibits on historical events, arts and culture, and important historical figures.

Cawthra Park Secondary School in Mississauga will kick-off its Black History Month celebrations with a school-wide assembly on Feb. 18.  The assembly will feature performances from vocal and dance students as well as poetry readings.  Canadian R&B singer, Jully Black, will be concluding the assembly with personal reflections and a performance.
Guest speaker, Rahel Appiagyei, will visit Caledon East Public School on Feb. 10 to speak at a school-wide assembly about her experiences of poverty and famine in Ghana, and how she and her family transitioned to life in Canada.

The HJA Brown Education Centre is located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. Cawthra Park is located at 1305 Cawthra Rd. in Mississauga. Fairlawn is located at 40 Fairlawn Blvd. in Brampton. Caledon East is located at 15738 Airport Rd. in Caledon.
