Sharon Stevens-Lay, principal of Peel Alternative Programs, has been named one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals by The Learning Partnership.
In her role with the Peel District School Board, Stevens-Lay oversees the Peel Alternative Schools (PAS), the Safe and Caring Schools program and the board's field centres. With a strong understanding of the challenges PAS students face, she maintains strong community partnerships to support students who were not successful in regular high schools. In the three years since she arrived, graduation rates have improved from 371 students to 440. In 2011-2012, PAS received a Premier Award for Safe and Accepting Schools.
Stevens-Lay and the other educators being recognized by The Learning Partnership will receive their awards at a gala at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto on Feb. 25. For more information on the award, visit http://bit.ly/1eASKyP.
