January deadline set to register children for French Immersion, Extended French

Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI) or Extended French (EF)? For the 2014-15 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI or grade 7 EF by Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Registration for FI/EF can be done through online forms available at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration. Students will have access to busing if their home address is within the Peel District School Board’s established transportation eligibility distances.

“The registration date will help determine the number of grade 1 and 7 FI and EF classes at each school for the 2014-15 school year,” says Shawn Moynihan, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. “The January deadline helps the board hire the appropriate number of qualified staff it will need, and helps reduce the level of student disruption in September since no new FI classes will likely be created at re-organization time.”

A random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who make the registration deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Students who currently (2013-14) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 2 to 7) would not be included in the random selection process and would be automatically registered into grade 1 FI. However, students must register by the deadline to be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program.

It's important to note that the grandparenting of siblings applies only to families who currently (2013-14) have children in the elementary FI program (grades 2 to 7). This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2014-15 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 2 to 7 FI will participate in the random selection process in future years.

Students who are currently in Kindergarten FI in other publicly-funded school boards and register by the deadline will be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program. They will not be included in the random selection process.

Registration for FI/EF for the 2014-15 school year started on Nov. 22, 2013. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Registration for FI/EF can be done through online forms available at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration.

Additional information about the FI registration process, random selection process system and waitlist is available on the board’s website at www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/French/registration. Parents can also visit the website of Canadian Parents for French (Ontario) at http://on.cpf.ca/ for additional information.
