Special education support starts now for new kindergarten students

Parents of children with special needs invited to workshop to learn about programs, transition to school

Parents of children who have a documented developmental disability, ASD/PDD, physical disability, vision loss or hearing loss and who will start kindergarten in September 2014, are invited to attend an information session on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014. The session is designed to provide parents and caregivers with the information they need about the transition to school. Parents will have an opportunity to ask the questions that are most important for their family.

“Starting kindergarten is a big step for both children and their parents—and even more so when a child has special needs,” says Louise Sirisko, superintendent of special education support services. “We recognize this and want to start working with families as soon as possible to help prepare for their child’s transition to school. We want the chance to meet them, explain our programs and answer questions. We want to assure families that the school experience will be a positive one.”

The session features a panel discussion with experts from the Peel board and the Community Care Access Centre who will talk about the supports available for students. Topics include:

• how to register for kindergarten
• how the intake process works and the types of information schools and staff will ask for in order to better understand the child’s needs
• an overview of how special education staff prepare to welcome new students, including visiting the child before the start of school and working with the Community Care Access Centre to prepare the classroom
• information about the special education supports provided in schools

For more information about the information session, call 905-890-1010, ext. 2198. The session is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga.

Parents can register children born in 2010 to start kindergarten in September 2014. Registration takes place at the school the child will attend on Feb. 4, 5, 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Feb. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Schools will also register students throughout the spring and at the end of August. Parents can call 905-890-1010/1-800-668-1146, ext. 2212 to find out which school their child will attend.

To prepare for kindergarten registration, parents of children with special needs can visit the kindergarten registration section of www.peelschools.org and download the Planning For Entry Form. The completed form should be submitted to the school during registration. The form provides schools and the Special Education department with important information about the child’s needs.
