Lincoln M. Alexander Secondary School hosts workplace safety event for students on Nov. 29

Lincoln M. Alexander will host the Celebration of Future Leaders in the Ontario Workplace on Nov.29, from 7:45 to 11:30 a.m. Rob Ellis, president of MySafeWork, will speak to grade 11 and 12 students about safety at school and in the workplace. Students will have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions featuring 25 business leaders from various industry sectors in Ontario.

“Having Rob, along with a group of business leaders at Lincoln M. Alexander to deliver the message about the importance of workplace safety will help educate and raise awareness among students,” says Peter Hill, principal at Lincoln M. Alexander. “Our school will be a resource centre for the community and ensure that messages about workplace safety reach our students and parents.”

In 1999, Ellis lost his son in a tragic work-place related accident and has since become an outspoken advocate for workplace safety. Ellis is the president of MySafeWork, a charitable foundation whose goal it is to help prevent injury and death among young workers. The foundation links students, parents, educators, corporate executives and workers together to talk about workplace safety.

“At Lincoln M. Alexander, we have students enrolled in various programs including Co-operative Education, a Transportation Specialist High Skills Major program and trades,” says Celine Di Nova, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program representative at Lincoln M. Alexander and event organizer. “Today’s event will have a significant impact on students.”

Companies participating in the event include: Enersource Utilities, Dupont Canda, K-Line Construction and Golder Engineering.

The presentation will be held in the school’s cafeteria beginning at 8:30 a.m. Breakout sessions will run from 9:45 to 11:10 a.m. in classrooms. Lincoln M. Alexander is located at 3545 Morning Star Dr. in Mississauga. For more information about the Peel District School Board, visit
