Peel schools 'send hope' to typhoon victims
The Peel District School Board is encouraging staff, students and parents to lend a helping hand on Nov. 21 for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Funds raised from Helping Hands: Toonie Thursday will be donated to Unicef to send urgent support to respond to the needs of all families and children affected in the Philippines.
"When something happens in another part of the world, it is our duty to respond. It is important to emphasize global citizenship to our students and help those in need," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "As we have successfully done in the past, we need to support each other when events like this occur."
Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the country flattening homes, devastating families and claiming thousands of lives. The storm has affected an estimated four million children, and more than 600,000 people have been displaced from their homes. Money raised through the Peel board will be used to support the most immediate priorities: medical supplies, therapeutic food, water and hygiene kits.
“Fundraisers are an opportunity for students to connect with their peers in the affected areas and learn more about the Philippines and the victims from this disaster," says Janet McDougald, chair of the board. "This disaster has had a huge impact on many people, including thousands of children, and the children need our help. The funds raised will go to support these families as they try to rebuild their lives."
The Peel board has provided flyers and fundraising ideas to support schools with the campaign. Donations will be matched in full by the Government of Canada.
The Peel board has a long history of raising funds for disaster relief around the world. Previous Peel board fundraisers include:
• Send Hope to Japan for victims of the April 2011 earthquake, schools raised $167,000
• Send Hope to Pakistan to raise funds for victims of the Sept. 2010 flooding, close to $138,000 was raised
• Send Hope to Haiti to raise funds for victims of the Jan. 2010 earthquake, students and employees nearly raised $368,000
