Peel board hosts parent meetings about French Immersion, Extended French options on Nov. 21

Registration deadline for French Immersion, Extended French is Jan. 31, 2014

The Peel District School Board will host parent information meetings about French Immersion (FI) and Extended French (EF) programs on Nov. 21. These programs are an option for parents to consider if they have a child who will start grade 1 or grade 7 in September 2014.

“What are the programs like? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the programs? How can I tell if it’s the right choice for my child? These are some of the questions parents have about the programs,” says Shawn Moynihan, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. “One way to help answer these questions is to attend the information meeting at the FI school your child would attend. Meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school. Hear about the program and have an opportunity to ask questions. Talk with some parents whose children are now in the program.”

Parent information meetings will be held at each FI and EF school on  Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. To find the FI or EF school for their area, parents can visit the board’s website at or call the Peel board at 905-890-1010/1-800-668-1146 ext. 2212.

A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. The cap is set at 25 per cent of the total annual grade 1 enrolment.  There is no enrolment cap for EF.

A random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who make the registration deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Students who currently (2013-14) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 2 to 7) would not be included in the random selection process and would be automatically registered into grade 1 FI. However, students must register by the deadline to be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program.
It's important to note that the grandparenting of siblings applies only to families who currently (2013-14) have children in the elementary FI program (grades 2 to 7). This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2014-15 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 2 to 7 FI will participate in the random selection process in future years.

Students who are currently in Kindergarten FI in other publicly-funded school boards and register by the deadline will be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program. They will not be included in the random selection process.

Registration for FI/EF for the 2014-15 school year starts on Nov. 22, 2013. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Registration for FI/EF will be done through online registration forms that will be available on Nov. 22 at

Additional information about the FI registration process, random selection process system and waitlist is available on the board’s website at Parents can also visit the website of Canadian Parents for French (Ontario) at for additional information.
