Peel board students, staff honour Remembrance Day with special assemblies

Students and staff across the Peel District School Board will recognize Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 with events and various activities to honour our Canadian heroes. Staff at the HJA Brown Education Centre will also hold a reception to celebrate heroes and honour those who are still serving our country.

“Students and staff from our schools and locations gather every year for special Remembrance Day ceremonies,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “It’s important to pay tribute to those who fought for our freedom and equally important to recognize and honour the men and women who are still serving our country today.”

In Mississauga, Streetsville Secondary School will have a school-wide assembly which will include presentations from a Canadian soldier as well as the school’s grade 10 drama class. Three grade 10 history classes will also walk to Streetsville’s cenotaph to participate in the Legion’s Remembrance Day service.

Conestoga Public School in Brampton will hold an assembly for grades 3 to 5 students, which will include a presentation of In Flanders Fields and a choir performance. Kindergarten to grade 2 students will take part in a wreath ceremony in front of the school’s flagpole. Last week, the school welcomed World War II veteran, Jim McCorkle, at an assembly for grades 4 and 5 students. McCorkle shared his experiences as a squadron leader and pilot during the war.

Alloa Public School in Caledon will hold an assembly that will include music performances and student poetry readings about past and present soldiers.

Peel board staff will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga for a Remembrance Day tribute beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Nov. 11. The event features readings by Peel board employees, a video from Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School, and live performances by students from Morton Way Public School, and Cawthra Park and Mayfield secondary schools.
