Over 50 Peel District School Board students will attend the Peel Regional Police Student Career Day at the Emil Kolb Centre for Police Excellence on Nov. 9. Many of the students are enrolled in the Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services Specialist High School Major (SHSM) program at Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School in Brampton.
“This is an exciting career exploration event, designed by Peel Police officers, to support Peel students in determining their career pathways by giving them a sense of what a day in the life of a police officer is like,” says Patricia Rossall, superintendent, alternative programs at the board. “After the success of last year’s event, we had an overwhelming interest from students to participate in this year’s event.”
Following a recruitment presentation in the morning, students will attend workshops where they will have the opportunity to dust and lift fingerprints, participate in training techniques and scenarios provided by instructors, and learn about traffic safety. Students will participate in interactive workshops with officers from Traffic Services, Tactical and Explosives Disposal Units, Use of Force Bureau and Forensic Identification. They will have the opportunity to learn the roles of a police officer and take part in hands-on activities. Students will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the day.
This event is considered to be a Reach Ahead experience, one of the required components of the SHSM program. Guidance and Career Education programs encourage students to take part in events such as the Peel Police Career Day to explore career pathways.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 9. The Emil Kolb Centre for Police Excellence is located at 180 Derry Rd. East in Mississauga.
