School bus drivers receive gifts of thanks from students, staff on Oct. 16

Peel schools celebrate Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Peel District School Board schools will celebrate School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on Oct. 16. Over 42,000 Peel board students are safely transported to and from school each day by these dedicated individuals.

“October 16 provides the opportunity to show how much we appreciate the hard work and dedication our bus drivers put into their jobs every day,” says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. “On behalf of the Peel board, I would like to thank school bus drivers for the important role they play in keeping our children safe when they’re arriving and leaving school.”

Students, staff and parents are encouraged to recognize their bus drivers in their own special ways. In Brampton, students at Beryl Ford Public School will design hand-made cards—big and small—that will be given to each driver, along with tea and desserts. Bus drivers in Caledon will receive hand-made cards and hand warmers for the winter season from students and staff at Herb Campbell Public School. In Mississauga, students in the hospitality program at West Credit Secondary School will show appreciation for their bus drivers with gifts of fresh baked goods.

“A thank-you to our drivers who work through all types of weather goes a long way,” notes Dana Sheahan, principal at West Credit.  “The chance to recognize the commitment bus drivers have to our students should not go unnoticed.”

Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) currently transports approximately 60,000 eligible students from the Peel board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. STOPR requires a fleet in excess of 1,300 school buses to transport students approximately 80,000 kilometres each day.
The Peel board serves more than 153,000 students in kindergarten to grade 12. Operating 242 schools in the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga. For more information, visit the board’s website at www.peelschools.org.
