Secondary students from the Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will gather at the Mississauga Convention Centre on Oct. 17 for the first-ever Peel Student Food Expo. Organized by the Peel Action Team for Health committee (PATH) and in partnership with Peel Public Health, the event will give students the opportunity to share healthy recipes with their peers and vote for their favourite dishes.
“The Food Expo is a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate their culinary skills and showcase nutritious recipes which align with the Ontario School Food and Beverage Policy,” says, Dr. Mowat, medical officer of health at the Region of Peel. “This initiative will help students build life-long habits to improve their overall wellness and will encourage healthy-eating behaviours among thousands of secondary students in Peel.”
Students will hear from guest speaker Paul Finkelstein, secondary school culinary arts teacher and founder of The Screaming Avocado Café, and Grant Gordon, creative director of Key Gordon Communications. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a workshop that will focus on building a positive, student-led food environment to engage their peers and create healthy changes within their schools.
The expo will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will close with an awards presentation for schools with the highest scores. The winning recipes will then be shared with the Peel boards new café service provider, Aramark, to be considered for a permanent spot on secondary school cafeteria menus.
The PATH Committee was founded in April 2013 and includes student representatives from the Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. In partnership with Peel Public Health, the PATH committee is a student-led initiative, focused on providing a youth voice to create supportive environments for healthy living in the school setting.
The Mississauga Convention Centre is located at 75 Derry Road West in Mississauga.
