Children, parents play, learn together to build early literacy skills

Free drop-in programs for children from birth to four years, accompanied by a parent/caregiver
Helping families and children transition to school is the focus at the Peel District School Board's new Child and Family Learning Centres. Formerly known as the Hub and Readiness Centres, the centre operates programs at 14 Peel schools in Brampton and Mississauga, accommodating children from birth to four years of age, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

"With the implementation of full-day kindergarten, there has been a shift in the ages of children who access early years programming," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "The Child and Family Learning Centres provide a strong emphasis on promoting growth in the social emotional, physical, and language areas  for young children’s in a environment created just for their  learning needs.”

Each centre is led by a qualified early childhood educator (ECE) and offers a variety of experiences and activities to support early social, literacy and numeracy development. Participating together, parents and children will:
    • explore and create with art
    • build and construct with blocks and puzzles
    • learn and sing new songs
    • read together
    • learn early literacy skills through stories, games and play
    • meet other caregivers and families in their communities

"Learning is not just for children – it's a lifelong endeavour," says Jeff deFreitas, superintendant of education, early years. "When parents and caregivers get involved in their children's education at an early age, research shows children are more likely to succeed."

The free drop-in programs are available to families across the region, regardless of where they live in Peel. To learn more about the hours of operation and programming at each centre, please visit
