New orientation day will ease transition for grade 6 students

Peel board’s field centres introduce pilot program to welcome students into middle school

Peel District School Board staff from Jack Smythe, GW Finlayson and Old Britannia Schoolhouse field centres will host an orientation day for grade 6 students from Royal Orchard Middle School on Sept. 11. Activities are planned that will help ease students’ transitions to middle school.

“Transitioning into new classrooms or schools can be a difficult process for some students,” says Catherine Unelli, principal of Royal Orchard. “This is not only a way to welcome students and make them feel more comfortable, but also a great way to introduce them to the outdoors and to the natural community.”

The orientation day will introduce students to green areas in their neighbourhood and encourage outdoor activities both during school and after. The goal is to inspire students to view their school, local parks and public outdoor spaces as hubs of the community.

“The field centres have run similar orientation days for grade 9 students, focusing on the outdoors and team-building activities around the school community,” says Rob Ridley, field centres coordinator. “This will be the first time we run similar activities for middle school students. Our hope is to continue to expand the program in the future.”

The Peel board’s field centres provide safe, educational and entertaining programs with specific ties to the Ontario curriculum for students from kindergarten to grade 12. Each year, the centres open the eyes of over 35,000 students to the wonders of the great outdoors and to the history of the area.
