Peel board honours long-serving volunteers for contributions to student success

The Peel District School Board will honour its long-serving volunteers with a special reception at the HJA Brown Education Centre on May 30. Those being honoured have volunteered in Peel for at least five years or are community members on board committees.

"Five years or more of volunteer service to the schools and children of Peel is definitely a commitment worth celebrating," says Janet McDougald, Peel board chair. “Our volunteers demonstrate the power a single individual has to make a difference in our schools, and this reception is our way to say thank you—to show them how much we appreciate their commitment to nurturing the success of our students.”

More than 700 volunteers have been invited to attend the reception. The board will recognize school volunteers and those who serve in the Roots of Empathy program and on the following committees:

• Friends of the Schoolhouse Committee
• Library Board Representatives
• Parent Involvement Committee
• Special Education Advisory Committee
• Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils Committee

The volunteers will enjoy musical entertainment by grade six student Wayne Zhu from Camilla Road Senior Public School and  a performance by members of Mayfield Secondary School’s dance group, Breathe. There will be a dessert reception catered and served by students from Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School. Volunteers who attend will receive a small gift, a potted plant, and have a chance to win a door prize.

The following organizations have donated gifts for the volunteers:

Bird Kingdom
Black Creek Pioneer Village
CN Tower
Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament
Ontario Science Centre
Royal Botanical Gardens
Wild Water Kingdom
Guests will also hear from  comedienne Kate Davis. In  her presentation, Balancing Life with Humour, Kate will share practical techniques volunteers can use for refuelling, rediscovering and reengaging themselves.

The HJA Brown Education Centre is located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. The reception will begin at 7 p.m., in the atrium and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the boardroom.
