Updated: Peel students with disabilities participate in inclusive track and field event

Update: Due to the forecasted rain, the event date has been changed from June 6 to June 13.

On June 13, more than 100 elementary students with disabilities will participate in the first Brampton Northwest Connects (BNC) Special Games, hosted at Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School. The day will bring together students from 14 schools from both the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board for a friendly track-and-field competition.

“This is the first event of its kind and size in our community,” says Kyra Kristensen-Irvine, one of the organizers of the event and principal at Rowntree Public School. “We won’t be using stop watches or measuring tapes. Instead, we’re creating a fun atmosphere where students can be active while also celebrating their abilities and diversity.”

The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Fletcher’s Meadow, located at 10750 Chinguacousy Rd. in Brampton. A medallion ceremony with the Peel Regional Police and Region of Peel Fire Department will be held at 11:30 a.m. Students will then move to Cassie Campbell Community Centre at noon for lunch and activities. The community centre is located at 1050 Sandalwood Pkwy. W. in Brampton.
