Back-to-school shopping starts early for some Peel students

Peel board opens new balanced calendar school

Approximately 1,200 students will return to school on July 30, when Ray Lawson and Roberta Bondar public schools open their doors for the 2012-13 school year. Ray Lawson Public School is the newest balanced calendar school in Peel and opened this year as a kindergarten to grade 5 school with 275 students. Balanced calendar schools operate year-round by spreading traditional vacation time throughout the year.

"With a shorter summer vacation, students typically return rested and ready to learn, and have not yet had time to become bored," says Joan Hamilton, principal of Roberta Bondar. "We are happy to benefit from the continuous learning opportunities in the balanced calendar schedule and avoid the summer learning loss that can happen for some students. It’s always great to see staff and students equally eager for a fresh start."

During the 2012-13 school year, Ray Lawson and Roberta Bondar students will have the following breaks:

Fall break – Oct. 1 to 12, 2012 (inclusive)
Winter break – Dec. 17, 2012 to Jan. 4, 2013 (inclusive)
Mid-winter break – Feb. 11 to 15, 2013 (inclusive)
Spring break – March 11 to 22, 2013 (inclusive)
The school year ends June 28, 2013.

The balanced calendar school year features the same 188 days and curriculum as regular schools, but almost half of the two-month summer vacation time on the traditional school calendar is spread throughout the year.
