Over 500 students celebrate My Story in Our Journey at Asian Heritage month events

Hundreds of Peel District School Board students and teachers will take part in two Spotlight on Asian Heritage events on May 7 and 8 at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga. On May 7, students in grades 7 to 12 will participate in a panel presentation titled My Story in Our Journey: A Tale from Gold Mountain by Sandy Yep from the Ontario Ministry of Education, Rabia Khedr from Diversity Worx and Balpreet Singh from the World Sikh Organization. On May 8, students in grades 2 to 6 will participate in a keynote presentation by Hargurdeep Saini from the University of Toronto. On both days, students will then break off into groups and take part in various interactive workshops led by Just Ideas, Toronto Alpha and the Ministry of Education.

“Asian Heritage Month allows students to learn more about the rich culture and traditions of the Asian community and encourages them to share stories and grow as individuals and leaders,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “Our schools will take part in numerous activities throughout the month to help celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Canadians.”

In Mississauga, Cooksville Creek Public School will host a Multicultural Day on May 7 that will offer various Asian foods and henna artwork. On May 5, Chinguacousy Secondary School in Brampton will enjoy a presentation by Meher Pavri, Miss India Canada, 2007. Fairlawn Public School in Caledon will share facts about countries in Asia during morning announcements.

The Government of Canada officially recognized May as Asian Heritage Month in 2002. It provides an opportunity for Canadians across the country to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of Asian Canadians to the growth and prosperity of Canada.

Both Spotlight on Asian Heritage events run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The HJA Brown Education Centre is located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. Cooksville Creek Public School is located at 5100 Salishan Circle in Mississauga. Chinguacousy School is located at 1370 Williams Parkway in Brampton. Fairlawn Public School is temporarily holding at James Grieve P.S., located at 12175 Bramalea Road in Caledon.
