The Peel District School Board recognizes both Asian Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month in the month of May. We encourage staff, students, families and communities to spend time learning about the rich culture, heritage and contributions of Asian Canadians and Jewish Canadians, who throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous country we know today.
The Province of Ontario declared the month of May as Jewish Heritage Month in 2012. On March 29, 2018, the House of Commons passed the Senate Public Bill (SPB), Bill S-232 that designated May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month. On April 9, 2019, as part of the board's commitment to equity and inclusion, the Peel board approved a motion to recognize and celebrate Jewish Heritage Month in May.
The month of May was designated Asian Heritage Month when the Government of Canada signed an official declaration in May 2002. The Province of Ontario declared the month of May as Asian Heritage Month in 2005.
