Peel board to reduce number of grade 1 French Immersion classes for September 2020

On Jan. 28, 2020, the Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to reduce the number of French Immersion grade 1 classes from 143 to 113 due to challenges in filling ongoing French Immersion teacher vacancies for a period of one school year, pending the results of a board French Immersion Review. Despite the Peel District School Board's focus on recruitment of qualified French teachers over the last three years, the board continues to have vacancies in its existing French Immersion programs that are unable to be filled. This is primarily due to a shortage of qualified French teachers in Canada.

Effective September 2020, the number of grade 1 French Immersion classrooms at the following French Immersion schools will be reduced:

Applications for the French Immersion program are open until Jan. 31, 2020. Please note that applicants are not offered space to the program on a first-come, first-serve basis. A computerized random selection process will randomly assign a rank to each application that is received by the Jan. 31 deadline and will determine which students will be offered spaces in the grade 1 FI program next school year.

Families who missed the application deadline may apply for grade 1 FI or grade 7 EF until Sept. 8, 2020, at 4 p.m. Applicants will be placed on the school's waitlist and will not be a part of the random selection process.

On March 6, families who have applied for grade 1 French Immersion for September 2020 before the deadline will be advised if their child has been offered a space in the program or whether their child has been placed on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist.

Please note that students must apply to and, if accepted, attend the French Immersion school based on their home address. Flexible boundaries are not available for grade 1 FI.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to provide students and families with a high-quality French Immersion program.
