Elementary teachers to begin phase 3 work-to-rule on Jan. 13 unless progress is made at provincial bargaining table

This afternoon, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced that job action would escalate in public elementary schools across Ontario unless progress is made at the provincial bargaining table. Phase 3 of ETFO work-to-rule is set to begin next week.

ETFO has indicated that, starting Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, public elementary school educators will not:
  • supervise extracurricular activities unless they are scheduled within the regular school day
  • participate in field trips
  • plan or participate in any assemblies, except to provide supervision to students

Look for information to come from your child/children’s school about cancellations/postponements of extracurricular and field trips that affect your child/children.

As per information provided on ETFO’s website, ETFO has also said that, if the government does not to address the issues they have identified as critical by Jan. 17, 2020, ETFO members will begin a full withdrawal of services—strike action—on a rotating basis beginning Jan. 20, 2020. We don’t have any additional details on what this may look like at this time.

We understand that this is disappointing news and may pose challenges for students and families. As we learn more about the impacts of this escalated job action, we will share details with you as soon as possible.

We thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding.
