Students and staff across the Peel District School Board will recognize Remembrance Day on Friday, Nov. 9 with events and various activities to honour our Canadian heroes. Staff at the HJA Brown Education Centre will also hold a reception to celebrate heroes and honour those who are still serving our country.
"This year marks the 100th anniversary of Canada's Hundred Days and the Armistice. We want to take a moment to let them know that Peel remembers," says Peter Joshua, director of education. "Students and staff from across the Peel board will make joint efforts to pay tribute and show our gratitude -- not just on Nov. 11, but every day."
Students at Centennial Sr. Public School in Brampton will hold a Remembrance Day assembly, which will feature Able Bodied Seaman, Jules Gittens. The school will display authentic memorabilia and photos from staff and students' relatives who served in the World Wars. At the end of November, the school will host the Veteran Affairs Canada Borrow a Boot program and display a former soldier's combat boots.
On Nov. 7, Caledon East Public School in Caledon will welcome World War Two veteran, Russell Thompson, to its school. Thompson, whose brother served in World War One, will speak with Grade 7 and 8 students about his experience of joining the Canadian army at the age of 20 to serve in Canada and Europe.
Students and staff at Applewood School in Mississauga will have the opportunity to meet with a Colour Guard, a uniformed soldier representative from the Streetsville Legion who will share their story and experiences with students. Students will make a wreath to commemorate Remembrance Day and will present them to the Sergeant of Arms during their Remembrance Day ceremony.
Peel board staff will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga for a Remembrance Day tribute beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 9. The event features readings by Peel board employees, and live performances by students from Fletcher's Creek Sr. Public School, Meadowvale Secondary School and SouthFields Village Public School.
