Peel board helps ease transition for high school students new to Peel with World of Welcome orientation

More than 400 high school students and families new to Peel region will attend a one-day World of Welcome (WOW) orientation between August 28 and September 14. The orientation will be held across 17 schools in Mississauga and Brampton to help new high school students get ready for school in September.

“The WOW orientation is a great opportunity for high school students, who are new to Peel region, to familiarize themselves with Ontario’s education system and school routines,” says Nala Moorthy, multicultural settlement and education partnership facilitator. “It provides them useful information and resources and connects them with other students and staff, so that they have a head start on their first day of school.”

Over 50 multilingual school settlement workers from the Peel board’s five partner community agencies and the We Welcome the World Centres work together with teachers and student peer leaders to organize the orientation events. On the orientation day, students participate in group activities that allow them to explore the school, make new friends, and learn about the various services and programs available to them.

The orientation is held on designated days at each participating school. For a detailed list, please see the 2018 WOW Orientation schedule.

The WOW orientation is funded through the We Welcome the World Centre initiative by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). High school students who are new to Peel region and who have completed their registration through the Peel board’s We Welcome the World Centres are eligible to participate.

The Peel board’s We Welcome the World Centres are currently open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for 2018-19 school year registration and assessments. For more information, visit
