Approximately 4,000 students and their favourite Canadian authors will fill Brampton's Powerade Centre on May 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to celebrate literacy at this year's Forest of Reading Celebration. Students across Ontario who participate in the Forest of Reading Program are encouraged by teacher-librarians to read books by Canadian authors from different categories and vote for their favourite books.
"The Forest of Reading Celebration is an incredible event that brings together enthusiastic students, educators and volunteers whose dedication and passion for reading is inspiring. The celebration is the culmination of a year-long focus on reading Canadian literature," says Anna Caravaggio, Instructional Library Coordinator for the Peel District School Board. "The event showcases the energy and dedication that Peel students demonstrate towards reading and the strong connection they have to the Canadian authors we are honouring, not to mention the incredible commitment of teachers and teacher-librarians that support the Forest of Reading Program."
Students will learn the results of their votes as the winners of the following programs are announced: Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fiction, Silver Birch Non-Fiction and Red Maple Fiction. The event will also feature a number of renowned Canadian authors including:
- Helaine Becker
- Becky Citra
- Marina Cohen
- Joanne George
- Lorna Schultz Nicolson
- Joel Sutherland
- Vikki VanSickle
The celebration will be hosted by Derek Forgie, a Toronto-based standup, sketch comedian and activist. The event will also feature student performances from Cawthra Park Secondary School, and Hillside Public School. Other special performances include Future Shock, a Youth Hip Hop dance organization part of the Culture Shock family which provides experience studying and performing urban dance forms and White Pine Dancers, an award winning organization which provides an interactive, vibrant First Nations culture within the educational environment.
The Forest of Reading® is an annual program run by the Ontario Library Association (OLA), with a focus on connecting students with great books by Canadian authors and getting them involved in their school library. It is the largest recreational reading program in Canada to encourage the love of reading for all ages.
The Peel board would like to recognize that this event could not be possible without the generosity of the following sponsors:

- Saunders Book Company
The event is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on May 18 at the Powerade Centre, located at 7575 Kennedy Rd. S. in Brampton.
