During the month of May, Peel District School Board students and staff will participate in a number of events and activities to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, including the board’s annual Spotlight on Asian Heritage events which will take place on May 8 and 9 at the HJA Brown Education Centre. More than 500 students and staff will attend the spotlight events, which consist of a keynote presentation and interactive workshops led by Peel staff. Entertainment Tonight Canada host Sangita Patel will be the keynote speaker on May 8. York University student Nimrat Randhawa will share her personal connection to the Komagata Maru story during her keynote presentation on May 9.
“Although Asian Heritage Month takes place in May, our schools are committed to celebrating all communities and cultures throughout the school year,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “Our keynote and workshop presenters at our spotlight events will help inspire our students and staff to continue to shine the spotlight on Asian heritage in their schools and communities.”
Many Asian Heritage Month activities will take place across Peel schools during May, including:
Beatty-Fleming Sr. Public School in Brampton will host an Asian heritage assembly on May 30 where students will have the opportunity to learn about continental Asia, the variety of cultures and the Asian Diaspora. To help build connections and understanding, students can choose to share their family’s legacy and experiences on topics like moving to Canada, challenges they face and the differences and blending of cultures.
Oakridge Public School in Mississauga will host guest readers who will share their own cultural identity and what Asian heritage means to them. Peter Joshua will read to students on May 15.
