Meadowvale Secondary School's Construction Specialist High Skills Major program has teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to renovate the charity’s ReStore in Mississauga. Since the start of second semester in January, students have spent mornings and some Fridays transforming a portion of the current ReStore warehouse into a boardroom, kitchen and office space.
“This project is a great example of how organizations and schools can work together to provide opportunities for students, while meeting the needs of the community,” says Catherine Bruce, head of alternative programs and student success at Meadowvale. “Our students learn skills of the trade, gain practical experience and contribute to their community—all while working towards their high school diploma.”
“Our volunteers and the students are working side by side to complete this project, creating a win-win,” says Pat Lawrence, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Mississauga. “We gain much needed finished space, the students learn valuable skills and the project can be completed in a very cost effective manner.”
The Specialist High Skills Major in construction offers grade 11 and 12 students the chance to work with industry leaders and experience cutting-edge training in construction. It is one of 11 Specialist High Skills Major programs offered at Peel District School Board schools. For a full list of programs, visit www.makingmyway.ca.
