Peel board students, staff honour Remembrance Day with special assemblies

Students and staff across the Peel District School Board will recognize Remembrance Day on Friday, Nov. 10 with events and various activities to honour our Canadian heroes. Staff at the HJA Brown Education Centre will also hold a reception to celebrate heroes and honour those who are still serving our country.

"We strive to honour our Canadian heroes each and every day but on Remembrance Day, our students and staff from across the Peel board make joint efforts to pay tribute and show our gratitude," says Peter Joshua, director of education. "This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the battle in Passchendaele and Canada's 150th anniversary and we want to take the time to thank those who fought and continue to serve our country."

Students at Eldorado Public School in Brampton will decorate balloons in honour of brave Canadian soldiers who served our country. At the school-wide assembly, students from each classroom will bring forth the balloons to the front as the school band performs along with a video presentation.

James Grieve Public School in Caledon will hold a school assembly, which will include an instrumental quartet performance, student choir, dramatic reenactment by grade 6 students and poetry readings.

Students and staff at Streetsville Secondary School in Mississauga will hold a school-wide assembly inspired by a school trip last March to the Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate in Belgium. The Belgian ceremony has occurred nightly since the end of WW1 with names of the Canadian soldiers that fought in the war engraved on the Menin Gate arch. The Streetsville assembly will feature student band performances and poetry reflections.

Peel board staff will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga for a Remembrance Day tribute beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 10. The event features readings by Peel board employees, and live performances by students from Applewood School, Mayfield Secondary School and Terry Fox Public School. The ceremony will be available live on the board's Facebook page at or by visiting
