Peel District School Board students and staff raised a total of $437,188 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation and the Terry Fox School Run. Three Peel schools, William G. Davis Senior Public School, Hazel McCallion Senior Public School and Humberview Secondary School, ranked sixth, eleventh and seventeenth respectively in the Top 50 of 2016 in Ontario list of schools who raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation. Collectively, the 50 schools raised over $970,000.
Schools across the Peel board planned a variety of fundraisers and staff, students and families were encouraged to donate a loonie or toonie as a part of Terry Fox Run in the fall. Fundraising activities included bake sales, car washes, student-led activities and much more.
"At the Peel board, we're committed to continuing the legacy of Terry Fox and reminding our children, youth and families right here in Peel of the power they have to inspire change and support one another," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "The dedication to help those in need is impressive and I extend a sincere thank you to all of our students, staff and families for their incredible generosity."
Brampton school William G. Davis Senior has hosted approximately 31 runs. This year, they raised a total of $20,354. The school has been participating in the Terry Fox School Run since 1984 and has raised more than $421,000 since then. William G. Davis Senior has been in the top 10 schools in Ontario for the last 10 years and the top public school in all of Ontario for the last several years. The school hosts its annual run at a local park and has volunteers from the community help count funds raised.
This year marks the tenth year in a row that Hazel McCallion Senior has ranked on the Terry Fox top 50 schools, raising $16,856. In the 13 years that the school has participated in the Terry Fox Run, they have raised and donated a total of $217,594. The school planned a variety of fundraisers, including silent auctions, school dances and classroom challenges with awards for the top two fundraisers. Every year, Hazel McCallion Senior, located in Mississauga, continues its tradition to capture a rooftop picture of all staff and students after the annual Terry Fox run/walk.
Humberview, located in Caledon, hosted various student-led fundraising initiatives, including pizza sales, class competitions, video productions and custom participation stickers for the Terry Fox Run. This year, students once again partnered with the Ontario Provincial Police School Resource Officers and the Caledon Fire Department to support the cause. In total, Humberview raised $14,480 this year and to date has raised more than $146,235.
