Peel board graduation rate continues to rise at 93 per cent
The Peel District School Board's secondary graduation rate has risen from 79 per cent in 2005-06 to 93 per cent. Today, the Ministry of Education released the provincial and board-by-board rates—the provincial five-year graduation rate is 86.5 per cent.
The Ministry of Education uses a different method to calculate graduation rates and reports the Peel five-year rate as 87.7 per cent instead of 93 per cent. This difference is due to a variety of mathematical factors, such as the ministry including students who transfer to other Ontario school boards after their grade 9 year and those students who are working to complete an Ontario Secondary School Certificate (OSSC) or Certificate of Achievement, not an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
"We truly believe that the Peel board's calculated graduation rate of 93 per cent is a far more accurate reflection of the achievement of our students," notes Carol Speers, superintendent of alternative programs. "As we move closer to a 100 per cent graduation rate, we are now examining who the non-graduates are. Gaining a better understanding of the 7 per cent will help us best support these students to reach their full potential, whether that be working towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, Certificate of Achievement or Ontario Secondary School Certificate."
Notes Tony Pontes, director of education, "This exceptional increase in our grad rate over the past 10 years is a testament to the outstanding work and commitment of elementary and secondary staff, school leadership, central support staff, and of course, our students."
"We have had a clear and defined plan of action to make significant progress on graduation rates—a plan that has produced tangible and positive results," says Pontes. "We're so very proud of everyone's efforts to ensure all students achieve personal excellence."
Peel board staff will share a detailed report of the 2015-16 graduate rates and non-graduates at the Regular Meeting of the Board on May 29, 2017.
