More than 500 students and teachers from across Peel will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre on Feb. 6 and 7 for the Peel District School Board’s Spotlight on Black Heritage events. Participants will take part in hands-on, interactive workshops facilitated by the Nia Centre for the Arts.
“This event brings students and teachers from different schools and cultures together to learn about the rich culture of black Canadians,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “Schools across Peel are committed to recognizing the many achievements and contributions made by the black community, not just in February, but throughout the year.”
This year’s event will feature a variety of artistic and educational workshops including, music, dance, poetry and storytelling. Students in grades 7 to 12 will attend the event on Feb.6 and students in grade 2 to 6 will attend on Feb. 7.
Many Peel board schools will host Black History Month celebrations in February. Staff and students at David Leeder Middle School in Mississauga have prepared daily announcements, and will participate in an interactive performance by the African Theatre Ensemble.
Maestro Fresh Wes (Wes Williams) will be at Sandalwood Heights Secondary School in Brampton to present Stick to your vision on Feb. 11, a workshop to help students overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Students at Herb Campbell Public School in Caledon have created morning announcements throughout February to educate their peers about Black History Month.
