Rowntree Public School helps to grant student wish

Rowntree Public School student, Apinan (Api) Shanmuganathan, has been given a shopping spree as his wish from the Children’s Wish Foundation. Shanmuganathan is a 10-year-old student with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a degenerative muscle condition.

Since Shanmuganathan joined the Rowntree community last spring, staff and students have been committed to helping Shanmuganathan and his family. They joined together to provide food and Christmas gifts for him and his two sisters, and staff members arranged for a contractor to visit the Shanmuganathan’s home to install lifts, a ramp and a properly equipped bathroom. A teaching assistant and teacher also worked with the ErinOakKids Centre for Treatment and Development to help secure funds for an electric wheelchair to replace his broken one.

The school has also teamed up with the Children’s Wish Foundation to grant Shanmuganathan’s wish of a shopping spree at Square One Shopping Centre. He received $5,000 in spending money for the Apple Store, as well as $500 and gift cards for furniture and accessories at Walmart. Build-A-Bear Workshop will also provide discounted teddy bears for his sisters.

Shanmuganathan’s wish will take place on Jan. 26 at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga. He will begin his shopping spree at Walmart at 8 a.m., followed by a stop at the Apple Store at 9:30 a.m.
