Peel Region High Performers Program for student athletes, artists opens September 2017

Program will meet needs of grade 4 to 12 students who require flexible scheduling to train, compete

As of September 2017, high-performing student athletes and artists will be able to attend the Peel District School Board’s Peel Region High Performers Program. Open to students in grades 4 to 12, the program will offer flexible timetabling to accommodate demanding practice, competition, rehearsal and/or performance schedules that take place during the regular school day. The program will be offered at Britannia Public School (grades 4 to 5), Dolphin Sr. Public School (grades 6 to 8) and Mississauga Secondary School (grades 9 to 12).

“Over the years, we’ve heard from families who live in Peel, yet travel to and from Toronto every day so that their children can access flexible school schedules,” says Poleen Grewal, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. “Although Peel schools have been informally supporting high-performing student athletes and artists for years, this new program brings these students together so that they can learn with peers who require the same flexible scheduling in the delivery of their education.”

To qualify for the program, high-performing students must be recommended by a coach, agent or instructor who can verify the students’ levels of competitiveness, training hours and schedules. There is no fee to attend the program. “Students will be expected to work towards maintaining provincial academic standards and will be supported in their pursuit of academic achievement, while achieving athletic or arts excellence through their participation on sports teams and arts endeavours outside of school,” notes Grewal.

Students in the Peel Region High Performers Program will have the opportunity to participate in school activities and will be supported as they work towards meeting the expectations of the Ontario curriculum. Students will develop academic skills through online and in class learning. They will be on a modified timetable that reflects each student’s individual training and competition schedules.

Information about the registration process and the number of spots available in the Peel board’s Peel Region High Performers Program will be posted on www.peelschools.org/HighPerformers this fall. Individual student applications, including a $40 application fee, will be accepted beginning Fall 2016—intake into the program will be ongoing and students can apply at any point during the year.

Peel Region High Performers Program will be offered at three Peel board schools—all in Mississauga. Britannia Public School is located at 1145 Swinbourne Dr., Dolpin Sr. Public School is located at 18 Brookside Dr., and Mississauga Secondary School is 550 Courtneypark Dr. W.
