January 29 deadline set to apply for French Immersion, Extended French for 2016-17 school year
Are you thinking of applying for French Immersion (FI) or Extended French (EF) for the 2016-17 school year? For entry into grade 1 FI or grade 7 EF, parents must apply online at www.peelschools.org/French by Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at 4 p.m.
"The timing of the application deadline will help the Peel board determine the number of grade 1 FI and grade 7 EF classes at each school for the 2016-17 school year," says Poleen Grewal, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. "The January deadline helps the board hire the appropriate number of qualified staff it will need, and helps reduce the level of student disruption in September since no new FI classes will likely be created at re-organization time."
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. The cap is set at 25 per cent of the total annual enrolment number in grade 1. There is no enrolment cap for EF.
A random selection process system is used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who apply by the deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist. Each school has its own waitlist.
Exceptions to FI random selection process
Students who are currently in a Kindergarten FI program in another publicly-funded school board and apply by the deadline will be placed into the grade 1 FI program.
Students who currently (2015-16) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 4 to 7) and apply by the deadline will be placed into the grade 1 FI program. This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2016-17 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 4 to 7 FI will participate in the random selection process in future years.
Additional information about the FI application process, random selection process system and waitlist is available on the board's website at www.peelschools.org/French. Parents can also visit the website of Canadian Parents for French (Ontario) at http://on.cpf.ca/ for additional information.
