Secondary school students and families new to the Peel District School Board will attend one-day World of Welcome (WOW) orientations that will help prepare them for school in September. The sessions will be held between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4 at 17 schools in Mississauga and Brampton.
“The WOW orientation is an excellent resource for secondary school students as well as their families who are new to Peel region,” says Nala Moorthy, Multicultural Settlement and Education Partnership (MSEP) facilitator. “We familiarize them with Ontario’s education system, school routines and help them connect with staff and other students so they’re all set for their first day of school in Peel.”
On the orientation day, newcomer students partake in group activities that will help them find their way around school, meet and make friends, understand their timetable and learn about the various services and programs available to them.
Over 50 multilingual settlement workers from the Peel board and partner agencies collaborate with teachers and peer leaders to organize the sessions. The WOW orientation is funded through the We Welcome the World initiative by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). New secondary school students who have completed their registration through the Peel board’s We Welcome the World Centres are eligible to attend the orientation.
The We Welcome the World Centres are currently registering new elementary and secondary students for the 2015-16 school year. The centres are open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the summer.
