Four Peel board students graduate with 100 per cent average

More than 4,800 Peel board students make Ontario's Top Scholar list

Hardeep Begda from Central Peel Secondary School, Annie Chan from Glenforest Secondary School, Purav Shah from Turner Fenton Secondary School and Gaurav Talwar from Rick Hansen Secondary School achieved the highest average within the Peel District School Board for the 2014-15 academic year. These students are among the Peel board's 4,896 Ontario Top Scholars, students graduating grade 12 with an average of 80 per cent or higher in their top six grade 12 courses.

Begda will major in accounting and financial management at the University of Waterloo in September. Begda's advice for fellow students is, "Understand your teacher's expectations, prepare before class and don't procrastinate." He plans to graduate from the University of Waterloo and then becoming a forensic accountant or an actuary, but admits, "You never know what the job market will be like five years from now."

Chan will take the biotechnology and accounting program at the University of Waterloo. Chan provides a few secrets to success: "knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, and when to take it easy."

Talwar, who plans to study general sciences at Queen's University this fall, attributes his success to a positive and hard-working environment created by his parents, teachers, school support staff and peers. "To succeed, it's always essential to value what one has and to then make goals that benefit the community," he says.

Shah will major in biomedical engineering at the University of Waterloo. Shah was able to achieve his perfect average due to, "support from family, work ethic and discipline."

Manraj Nijjar from Mayfield Secondary School had the second highest average in Caledon with 97.3 per cent. Next year, he will attend Western University, and enrol in a double degree in medical sciences and business at the Richard Ivey School of Business. Nijjar is also planning to play for Western's Varsity Lacrosse team. Nijjar would like to pursue medical school after completing his undergraduate degree.

The total number of students on the Ontario Top Scholar list at the Peel board has increased from last year's total of 4,370. Last year, seven students from Turner Fenton Secondary School earned perfect averages.
