Ontario elementary teachers begin work-to-rule on May 11, Peel elementary schools remain open

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) confirmed this afternoon that their members will begin work-to-rule on administrative duties in all Ontario public elementary schools on May 11, 2015.

All Peel District School Board elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 8) will be OPEN to students next week. May 11 remains a Professional Activity Day so students should not come to school on Monday, but should attend the rest of the week. Before- and after-school programs and busing will continue for elementary students.

Provincial ETFO has informed us that special education services that happen during the instructional day will continue.
They have also confirmed that field trips and
other extracurriculars, such as lunch days, sports teams, clubs and graduations will continue at this time.

Late this afternoon, provincial ETFO informed the Peel board that under the elementary teachers and elementary occasional teachers' administrative work-to-rule, teachers will not:

  • perform duties related to EQAO—we have asked the Ministry of Education what impact this will have on the administration of EQAO and will share their direction with families when we know.
  • participate in professional development related to Ministry of Education initiatives
  • prepare report card comments—they will provide the principal or vice-principal with students' marks and the board is developing a plan to ensure students receive their report cards
  • conduct any reading, writing or mathematics assessments other than those the teacher deems necessary to report on student progress
We continue to monitor the situation and its impact on elementary students. We want you to clearly understand the status of our schools during any job action. To stay up-to-date:

As a board, we value the work of our elementary teachers and remain committed to reaching fair, negotiated agreements with all of our employee groups. Thank you for your patience, support and understanding.
